According to an ancient legend, Buddha invited all the animals of creation to a great New Year's feast and announced that the order of the animals in the zodiac would be determined by when they arrived at his feast. Rat, buffalo, tiger, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig - and rabbit took part. It was said back then that the hare was proud and somewhat haughty because of his speed and always made fun of the buffalo because he was so slow.
