From rock musicians to the cigar sommelier to cigar maker
Pete Johnson is a man with many talents. At the beginning of the nineties, still the bass player of a rock band on the strip of Los Angeles, he met and loved cigars. When his band disbanded, Pete looked for a job at California's oldest cigar dealer, Gus's Smoke Shop. He came to the right place: the cigar boom was just about to start. Pete quickly developed an extraordinary palate for cigars and became a cigar buyer within six months of age. But because of the enormous hype it was impossible to find a manufacturer with free capacities. One evening at the Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills, a colleague of a small company who was supposed to employ a unique torscor, a company called Tropical Tobacco, told him. The name of the torscedor was José Pepin Garcia.
Two months later, Pete held the first patterns, but they were not after his imagination. So he visited José to talk about the Blend. What a fateful encounter! Only 25 years later, both were to be among the most successful and popular cigar makers in the world. Pete did not speak Spanish and José not yet English, but her shared love, passion and passion for cigars let her overcome the language barrier. A translator may have helped to simplify the whole process a little. The perfect blend was quickly found and Pete ordered 300 boxes. The boxes were sold in a blink of an eye and "Tatuaje" was born. Pete took a course at a community college that helped him better understand the business site, and Tatuaje officially launched in 2003. Nine years later, he sold over two million cigars.
