Germany has always been the most important market for the Danish brand Stanwell, as German pipe smokers were captivated by the brand.

Founder Poul Nielsen paved the way for this in 1946 by breaking new ground. He harnessed the expertise of local pipe makers—foremost among them Sixten Ivarsson—and granted them maximum creative freedom to reinterpret English classics. Through subtle, understated modifications, a completely new and distinctive design language emerged. "Danish Design" was born and went on to conquer the world.

Many Stanwell models still enjoy cult status today. Over the decades, this approach has resulted in a vast portfolio of iconic shapes. While small pipes are preferred in the domestic Danish market, the brand remains open to diverse markets and caters to their specific needs; for instance, large bowls suitable for 9mm filters have long been popular in Germany.
